House Tour ~ Formal Dining turned Office

This is technically the formal dining room of the house, however we are NOT formal kind of people.  Plus we only have one dining table...and we'd much rather have an office space.  So welcome to our office space. :)

Our office greets you on your immediate left as you enter the front door.

Before from Front Door

The first photo below is from the kitchen looking back toward the front door you see open with the previous owners cat looking out.  The second is from the entry way showing arched opened leading to back hall & kitchen door.

Another shot shows a look from the arched opening by the front door/entry. Note the interesting ceiling fan owners took with them...oh darn.

And by now you might have noted the elementary school paint color scheme. To each their own, but it's my home not my classroom. :) If you look back at all the photos there's one wall red, one green (hard to see in 3rd photo posted), one yellow, and one blue. White trim through the middle & tan on top.  Not our...uh...style?!

Every project needs an inspiration piece.  Ours was this photo:

Inspiration Picture

Our home already had this red, browns and greens.  We had been wanting to add the blue/turquoise to the mix.  This photo helped do that exact thing.  The wall color came from a shade of blue in the middle of the art.  Then I found the rug that brought together the colors in the rest of the house and the new blue. Thank you Ross for the $12 art, $50 rug & $14 curtains. LOVE Ross!!

The rug has lots of the green that is else where throughout our house and is also the green/gold of the curtains I found. The photo isn't great of the curtain color.

Then came the furniture.  I really wanted Matt to build cabinets & a desk, but with starting a new job his time for projects is slim, so I knew purchasing furniture would get the room done much quicker.  And in the end it was best because we can take the pieces with us if/when we move again and could be arranged/moved/placed in many configurations or rooms.

So as you enter: Before/After

Standing in office toward kitchen opening.  Still need to do something with that corner.  A plant?  Stain curio cabinet darker?  Not sure...

Some other shots.  Standing in front of curio.  This is the wall-O-termites.  The window trim is tunneled with termites & the wood floor beneath will need repaired.  Pesky varmints!! The small bookcase holds some books and is for storage of my scrapbook albums.

A closer up of each bookcase.  We purchased all the furniture from Target.  I wish we could have went even cheaper with their 5 shelved bookcase and jazzed it up with trim & legs, but I really liked these with the cabinet doors for closed storage of some random books and one holds school supplies for afternoon homework duties. At some point we will replace the cardboard backing that is very apparent by the crease on the left photo and maybe do black bead board.

This photo shows how the bookcase/desk wall is also the garage wall. Door in photo below leads to the garage and to the right down the hall is laundry room & guest bed/bath.

All in all I LOVE this dining room repurposed into an office.  Many of the homes we toured when house hunting converted formal dining rooms into office/library spaces.  We did the same in our AZ house only we used make shift tables and never officially decorated the space. Love love love my "command central". :)
